Farming mastery fast

Mastery comes mostly from fights, and boss hunts pay far more than anything else. Once your character hits level 225, the crow and Muzan hunts stop paying Exp and pay mastery instead, often several thousand at a time, and that is the fastest farm there is. Before that, loop world bosses.

How a bar works and what each move needs is on the mastery page; this page is about filling it.

Numbers are the base, before any clan bonus or boost. No training dummy, statue or trainer minigame has been seen paying mastery, and no quest or code has been seen handing out mastery potions; the only boost is the shop’s 2x Mastery.

At level 225: hunts pay mastery

Slayers take hunts from their Kasugai Crow, demons from Muzan. At the level cap each row shows mastery where Exp used to be, and the numbers are big: rows between 1,650 and 4,200 have been seen. One hunt pays that amount to both your power bar and your weapon bar, and the kill itself adds another 540.

The board holds up to five hunts and adds a new one every minute or so, while a boss is back about five minutes after it dies. So the rhythm is: take every hunt on the board, kill each boss, and come back as rows refill. Where each boss stands is on the boss locations and bosses pages.

Hunt rewards follow how many players share the server: in a private one, 50% alone, 75% with two and full with three or more, so farm in a busy public server or bring friends. The same hunts pay Wen; see the Wen and Ore page.

What the rewards look like

Mastery shows as a toast at the top of the screen, naming every bar it went to. Two hunts and a ranked win:

A row of reward toasts after a crow hunt

After the hunt and the kill: +2,430 Wen +2700 Water and Sword Mastery +1,000 Exp +450 Wen, then the kill's own mastery toast.

Reward toasts where the weapon mastery number is higher

+2025 Thunder and +2430 Sword Mastery for the hunt, +648 Sword and +540 Thunder Mastery for the kill.

Reward toasts after a ranked win

Heart Ablaze Mode; +6,486 Wen +1000 Flame and +1200 Sword Mastery.

Why some toasts show two numbers

When the weapon number is exactly 1.2 times the power number, as in +2025 Thunder and +2430 Sword Mastery, the player has a clan with the Master Swordsman passive: +20% Katana and Weapon mastery. Every split toast seen fits that 1.2 exactly. The clans that carry it are Rengoku, Agatsuma and Iguro; Shinazugawa and Douma have a 25% version. Set any two side by side on the clan comparison page.

How many runs your next levels take

Every bar level costs 30 times its number, so the climb gets steeper. Enter a range, for example up to 53 for a style’s last move, and compare the methods.

Lv 1 to Lv 53 takes 41,340 mastery. Runs needed with each method:

  • Crow or Muzan hunt, plus the kill13 × 3,240

Character level 225 only; 2,700 is one board row

  • Ranked win42 × 1,000

    Per win

  • World boss kill77 × 540

    Any level

  • Trainee mini boss383 × 108

    Thunder Trainee

  • Mizunoto (as a Slayer)460 × 90

Costs 9 reputation each; a demon weapon was seen getting 41

  • Bear1,378 × 30

    Starter area

Shorter bars mean fewer runs, not less time: a hunt means travelling to a boss and fighting it, a bear dies in seconds. The 2x boost is applied to kills only, since that is where it has been seen doubling the number.

Buying mastery at the Tower Crystal

After an Ouwigahara run, the Tower Crystal sells mastery for any weapon or power you own at 3,000 tower points a pick. How much one pick gives is not printed; right after one purchase a Gauntlet bar read Lv 8. It is a handy top-up for a bar you rarely fight with, but a good run’s points also buy V2 weapons, so plan the basket on the Ouwigahara page.

Every mastery pick costs 3,000; hovering Gauntlet Mastery with 3,607 points. Trade your tower points for mastery in any weapon or power you own.

Small things that add up

  • Swap weapons mid-fight. A boss kill credited three bars at once when a spear was used alongside the sword, so the weapon you want to level gets the kill too.
  • Use a breathing move on small enemies. One Slayer’s cave kills paid sword mastery only; reportedly, a breathing skill has to land before the kill for the breathing bar to count.
  • Save the 2x boost for boss loops. It doubled a 540 kill to 1,080; the price is on the mastery page.
  • The bars go high. A sword bar at Lv 298 still followed the 30-per-level rule, so there is plenty of room past the last move at 53.
